It’s officially holiday party season and it’s time to plan our outfits for those events held by your office, friends and family. Winter time offers a host of options — and despite the fact that it’s getting darker outside, that does not mean you need to resort to basic blacks. Festive colors, plaids and sparkles are on my radar this winter. Check out some of my picks to look fabulous this season:
The Plaid Shirt Dress, The Oxford Trunk
I love the idea of this oversized plaid shirt, with its asymmetrical hemline, as a dress — belted of course — that addition will create a nice hourglass silhouette. A cozy plaid shirt is a comfy (and warm) alternative to a little black dress, but to make it work for a party you’ve got to glam it up a bit. Do a thick gold belt, the pop of shine and contrast in the texture will elevate your look. Check out this belt from Anthropologie, similar to the one in the photo. Add some black leggings (I’m partial to J.Crew’s Pixie Pant), after all, it is winter. And slip on your favorite pair of black booties to dress it up (Ralph Lauren has a nice pair that will work equally well with a pair of skinny jeans come January).
The Sequin Mini, J.Crew
Sequins are becoming more and more acceptable on the holiday circuit, because of companies like J.Crew who present them in a tasteful way. No, you won’t look like you’re headed to Las Vegas in this indigo sequin skirt, paired with cream silk cami (also J.Crew) and a pair of black opaque tights. Simple black pumps (Nine West) will add length to your legs and not compete with that sparkly skirt. Throw on a long silver tassel necklace from Banana Republic and you’ve got yourself an outfit. Not warm enough for your taste? Add a grey cashmere wrap (Nordstrom) to stay cozy.
The Unusual Necklace, Topshop
The statement necklace is a wardrobe staple, but for you, fashion-forward reader, let’s push the envelope a little bit and try an unusual statement necklace. Not only does it elevate a simple look for a small price tag, it’s a great ice breaker for that obligatory party where you find yourself surrounded with people you don’t know. Go edgy and wear it with with an all black outfit, such as a little black peplum dress from Maison Scotch and Pop Dot tights (Anthropologie). Or prep it up with a crisp white Brooks Brothers button down and Vince Camuto satin skinny pants. Your black pumps apply to both outfits here.
